O2-sponsored Hackathon Winner Qudini celebrates their 10th Birthday

After winning a hackathon sponsored by O2 in 2012, Wayra UK alumni and Retail Technology company Qudini celebrates 10 years in business.

Qudini, the software company that helps global brands like Nike, Sky and Samsung to improve the in-store customer experience, turns 10 years old on June 27. 

Founder Imogen Wethered had recently graduated from university when she attended the Isobar Create London Hackathon which O2 was sponsoring. Wethered and co-founder Fraser Hardy worked around the clock during the weekend hackathon to design and code an early prototype for their now award-winning Virtual Queuing System that eliminates the physical wait line in retail stores. Their idea had commercial potential–they won the hackathon. Within a couple of months, they were accepted into Telefonica’s highly competitive Wayra accelerator.

During the nine-month program, they developed their Walk-in Virtual Queuing System with mentorship from a number of O2’s top business leaders of the time. They were also able to accumulate a valuable list of contacts that would help them to grow their client base.

When Qudini’s time in Wayra came to an end, O2 decided to trial their software in a handful of stores. Soon after, a contract followed. O2 have been using Qudini’s software solutions ever since.

Imogen Wethered, Founder and CEO at Qudini, said: “Since O2, we’ve had the opportunity to work with some incredible retail brands who have worked closely with us to build out our new products for appointment booking and event booking. I’d like to thank everyone from Wayra, Telefonica and O2 for the incredible amount of support, help and trust you’ve given us over the years. We absolutely could not have done any of this without you.” 

Fraser Hardy, Co-founder and CTO at Qudini, explains: “One of the reasons we won that hackathon was due to how we presented our solution in the eyes of the customer. We talked about how our product really helped the customer and it solved a pain point, everyone was able to relate to it. I think one of the successes of Qudini is that we continued with that mindset. In the earlier days that involved me, Imogen and our first developer spent a day working in an O2 phone store alongside the staff. We took that feedback, made improvements then came back the next day with an updated version. We were obsessed with giving a great customer experience and really focusing on solving the problem.”
